“All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” (Jn 13:35) Jesus came to form communities centred round God’s love. Community is a miracle and can only be sustained through God’s love. As with all of Jesus’ miracles, the miracle of community points to the promise, presence and character of God, as well as God’s activity in the world through people. A truly loving community points to the promise of Jesus’ return. It points to the promise of the perfect Kingdom to come. It also points to the truth of God’s current activity in the world and proves God is love. God uses community to help us learn to love. It confronts us with our imperfection and selfishness, and enables us to change through forgiveness, mercy and grace. It can be a place of profound healing. We therefore need to do all we can to contribute to the health and vitality of our communities. This may involve deep work in ourselves through counselling and so on. Community is fragile and we need to guard against things that destroy trust and cherish the things that sustain it. We each have this responsibility. The work of the Kingdom is impossible without community. We each form part of the body of Christ and we need eachother probably much more than we realise. How can we be good news to the world if we are not good news to eachother? We need to allow enough space and opportunity for people (whether single, dating or families) to develop and express specific life stages in a wholistic way. |
